Its not often we get a group of talented ones to watch who are all working on the same project to shout about but here they are.
In late 2022, degree students on the Textile Design Course at NTU School of Art and Design were set a challenge to use colour to meet a real need. The response from everyone on the course was outstanding but the project that stole the show was delivered with such thought, creativity and combined passion, it was a clear winner.
We asked Kate Elliott, Lucy Parkes, Niamh Wright and Miza Nizam about their work and how they used colour to bring the project to life.
Tell us about your project.
We named our project ‘Mythical Escape,’ our idea was to create designs using Dulux’s latest global trends paint colours to achieve a multi-sensory immersive underwater experience.
How did you choose and narrow down colours?
There were many great palettes to choose from, happily we were all drawn to the same one which had the strongest colours in and seemed perfect for a playful children’s bedroom.
What was the most challenging part of your creative collaboration?
It was refining down our ideas to make sure that our collection worked well together and did not seem too jumbled. This was hard as we did not want to lose the playful experimentation in our work.
What was the best part of your creative collaboration?
We enjoyed working as a team, bouncing ideas off one another. We went on trips to support our research which was an important and enjoyable part of our collaboration.
Tell us why you think colour made a positive difference to your project’s success.
The colour pallet we chose initiated our concept and the bold colours led us to be experimental and imaginative which was one of the reasons why our collection came together as a team so well.
How did you feel about winning a Colour in Design Award – what does it mean to you?
We were all extremely excited to be given the award, it has helped us to feel more confident about what we can achieve in the future.
Where do you all want to be in 3 years’ time?
We all found collaborating very inspiring and want to work in an industry that communicates well as a team. We all plan to stay connected as would be great to collaborate again in the future.
What is your favourite colour and why?
Kate - Treasured Coral is my favourite, I know it sounds cheesy, but it brings a little pop of happiness to the designs.
Lucy - Lemon Jester was the colour that I incorporated into all my designs; I love the bright zing it gives.
Niamh - Bright Skies I was most drawn to as it is very calming and refreshing.
Miza – Cloudy Dreams, a soft gentle colour that compliments all the colours in the pallet.
