Where did you study and what is the course title?

University of Brighton and I studied BA 3D Design and Craft

Name of your lecturer/course tutor?

Jem Ryan

I want to design and make furniture and home decor that is sustainable for both people and planet, that’s accessible to everyone and meets a circular economy.

A line about how it feels to have been picked by the judges

I was extremely honoured to be picked by the judges and receive amazing feedback and excitement over my project, SEMI Furniture. It gave me clarification that the idea has potential to grow big!

Please tell us a little bit about the project that caught the judges’ attention.

My furniture project SEMI Furniture is furniture that is designed for both people and planet by using sustainable materials and processes, at an affordable price with its full lifecycle considered. It is hugely customisable to the user, so they can have something bespoke to them whilst also pieces that will last decades that can be expanded and adapted over time due to its high level of modularity.

How important is colour in your work and why?

Offering a range of colours in my work is important so that the user can customise their SEMI furniture piece to be bespoke to them and their style, and if their style changes over time they can easily interchange components out to new colours. It also allows my furniture to appeal to a wider target market with the more options and varieties of colours I have on offer. It helps them express themselves through their pieces.

What is your dream career path for the next 3 years?

My dream career path is to work as a furniture and home decor designer and maker full time, beginning with for a company so I can gain some more knowledge and experience around the sector. However, the end goal is to have SEMI Furniture be my full-time business, so for now I plan to work on it alongside employment.

What is your favourite colour?

I have lots of favourite colours but if I was to pick one then it would be pine green.
